  MPSTMA Fall Workshop at Woodbury's
  Bielenberg Sports Center Drew 180+
A program focusing on safety, a later event date and a well-known sportscaster boosted attendee numbers

On a crisp, blue sky Minnesota day, more than 180 people gathered on Nov. 16 for the MPSTMA Fall Workshop which was held at Bielenberg Sports Center in Woodbury.

MPSTMA Commercial Vendors outdoor equipment displays greeted attendees as they arrived at the sports center. Inside, attendees enjoyed the coffee and donuts provided by St. Croix Recreation and MTI Distributing which created a festive atmosphere amongst the vendor displays.

The education portion of the workshop began at 8 a.m. with Fred Rozumalski, Barr Engineering, talked about Climate Change and Plant Selection. At the same time, in another area, Paula Hildman gave a presentation on Soccer Field Safety and Field Dimensions.

At 9 a.m. Cerfified Sports Field Managers Mike McDonald, TCF Bank Stadium, and Roger Weinbrenner, University of St. Thomas gave insight on how TCF Bank Stadium was converted from a college field to a professional field for Minnesota Vikings games - sometimes on back-to-back days.

On another track at 9 a.m. Bob Clarin offered a presentation on Playground Safety and inspections and offered insight on playground equipment that may become obsolete due to safety concerns i.e. ladders.

After the morning education, members gathered for more Vendor time. Then, Woodbury host Paul Griffin, gave a history of how a farm back in 1991, and millions of dollars later, became a multi-sport super complex today named Bielenberg Sports Center.

At 11 a.m. Fall Workshop Committee Chair Ben Boeding, CSFM, introduced Keynote Speaker Joe Schmit, KSTP. Schmit gave a well-received, inspirational talk called Silent Impact which was about various people who have been and still are influential to others, just by their everyday actions.

After Schmit's keynote, Midwest Groundcover and Reinders sponsored a great, hot lunch catered by Tunnucci's.

To finish out the day, the City of Burnsville, City of St. Louis Park and the City of Eagan representatives provided presentations on mowing and the mowing equipment used in each city.

Presentations from the event:

SAFETY FIRST - PLAYGROUND MAINTENANCE, Bob Clarin

LANDSCAPE AND PLANTING DESIGN FOR OUR CHANGING CLIMATE - Fred Rozulmalski

SPECIES VULERABILITY LIST - Fred Rozumalski
