MPSTMA Fall Workshop Attracts 150 Members
To Plymouth Creek Center on November 15

 
 
On November 15, MPSTMA members spent the day at Plymouth Creek Center, Plymouth, learning from speakers and networking with peers and vendors. Beginning at 7 am, with a sponsored breakfast from Equinox Environmental Products and Hirshfield's Paints, members gathered and enjoyed a continental breakfast in a large room where 20 vendors displayed on tabletops along the perimeter. Midwest Groundcover, MTI Distributing Inc., and St. Croix Recreation sponsored lunch.
 
Brooke Asleson, State of Minnesota, led the morning off with a talk about 'Salt' - a relevant topic for this group and the upcoming winter season.
 
   Fred Kolkmann, Kolkmann Tennis and Sports Surfaces LLC, was next on the agenda. Kolkmann spoke about the construction and maintenance of tennis courts and pickleball courts. Pickleball is becoming a very popular recreational activity in Minnesota.
 
   Jeff Hahn, University of Minnesota Extension Entomologist, updated members on Japanese Beetles.
 
   Larry DiVito, Target Field/Minnesota Twins, and Roger Weinbrenner CSFM, University of St. Thomas talked and showed slides of the St. Johns/St. Thomas football game that took place in the fall at Target Field. They talked about what it took to convert the baseball field into a football field.
 
   Keynote Speaker Ross Bernstein, pictured above by the screen, engaged the audience with a 70-minute talk about his experiences with professional athletes while writing more than 50 books.
 
   Jeff Fischer, Pioneer Athletics, and Bill Hachmeister, Aquatics, concluded the day in two separate break-out sessions. Fischer spoke on Artificial Turf and Hachmeister gave a talk about Splash Pads.

MPSTMA Network Picnic in SLP Featured a State of the Art Outdoor Covered Ice Rink

On Wednesday, Oct. 18, Rick Beane, Parks Superintendent for the City of St. Louis Park, and his staff, hosted a Network Picnic at the St. Louis Park Rec Center that more than 50 people attended. The City of SLP recently completed its "covered"  outdoor rink adjacent to the Rec Center. Plenty of barbecued Ribs were served for lunch.

All MPSTMA network picnics are free for members to attend and enjoy a couple hours networking, learning what others are doing in the area and eating eating a nice lunch.

Picnics are from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Miskimen and City of Burnsville
Host September Network Picnic


On Wednesday, Sept. 20, Paul Miskimen, Parks Crew Leader for the City of Burnsville, hosted a Network Picnic and 45 members attended. The picnic was held at Lac Lavon Park in the center of "the wheel." Miskimen welcomed the crowd and gave talked about the Burnsville facility.


The C
ity of Burnsville just completed a site renovation of its softball field complexes. 

Miskimen noted that they put in a new concession stand, field fencing, dugout roofs and a new irrigation system using the Toro Sentinel controller.

Garrett Beck, Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Director for the City of Burnsville, addressed the crowd and gave a short history of Lac Lavon Park. Lunch was catered by Davanniís.

Any member interested in hosting a picnic for MPSTMA should contact the MPSTMA office. The best months to host are April, May, September and October. Other months are doable but we may have another MPSTMA event that month, too.

Annual Meeting on Jan. 4

MPSTMA members will soon receive the 2018 MPSTMA Election Ballot via email in early December. Out-going Board Members include: Jack Leuning, General Member Representative, City of St. Louis Park; Al Hentges, Commercial Representative, Kromer Co.; Ben Wallin, MTGF Representative, National Sports Center, and Past President Jay Stadler, Carleton College.

On the ballot this year are: Josh Gerth, Bethel College; Reid Johnson, St. Paul Academy; Mark Kruse, City of Lakeville; Marshall Syvertsen, City of Edina; Paul Miskimen, City of Burnsville; Larry Gorman, MTI Distributing Inc.; Tom Thul, The Tessman Company; Rick Gabler; Superior Tech Products; Greg Brodd, Turfco Manufacturing, and Ken Rost, Frost Inc.

Matt Grosjean, University of Minnesota Rec Fields, is in line to become the 2018 MPSTMA President.

If you would like to be on the ballot, contact the MPSTMA office as soon as possible. The ballot will be finalized at a November 29 MPSTMA Board Meeting.

Northern Green Set for Jan. 2-4, 2018
At the Minneapolis Convention Center

Due to Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis, the Northern Green will take place two week earlier than usual. The Northern Green will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 2-4. In order to secure the Super Bowl, the City of Minneapolis needed to provide the National Football League with as much hotel space as possible for the month of January and especially the few weeks leading up to the Big Game. In 2019 the Northern Green will be held in the middle of January.

The MPSTMA Annual Meeting will take place during the Northern Green at 10:45 a.m. in Room 101FG at the Minneapolis Convention Center. The MPSTMA Board of Directors election will be finalized at that time and members will be briefed on MPSTMA events expected for 2018 and a look back at 2017.

The 2017 MPSTMA Field of the Year winner will be recognized at the Northern Green Awards Banquet on Tuesday night, Jan. 2.

A MPSTMA Appreciation Breakfast will be held at Key's Restaurant in Minneapolis on Thursday morning, Jan. 4, at 6:30 am. All members are invited to attend. The MPSTMA will pick up the tab.

The MTGF will hold a Master Class (formerly Super Tuesday) all-day session about turfgrass on Tues., Jan. 2 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. at the Minneapolis Convention Center as part of the Northern Green. The theme of the day is Urban Turfgrass: Benefits, Management and Environmental Issues. The speakers are listed above right in this newsletter.

MPSTMA Bowling Outing

MPSTMA members are invited to join the MPSTMA National Bowling Team for a couple of hours of bowling at the Park Tavern in St. Louis Park. Park Tavern is located at 3401 Louisiana Ave. S. in St. Louis Park.

If you plan on participating, contact Bowling Co-Chairs and Team Captains Ben Boeding, CSFM or Mike McDonald CSFM before Friday, Dec. 15 so appropriate lanes can be reserved. A group rate will be secured but members will be responsible to pay own way. You may also contact the MPSTMA office.

Anyone attending the January National STMA convention in Fort Worth, Texas, is encouraged to
bowl at this outing so National Team Captains Boeding and McDonald can get a feel for the type of bowler you are and pick winning teams that will compete against other Sports Turf chapters from around the United States of America.

The 2018 STMA Conference and Exhibition will be taking place January 16-19 in Fort Worth, Texas
