2018 Spring Workshop Attracts 200 Registrants
To the University of Northwestern in St. Paul

The MPSTMA Spring Workshop took place on Thursday, March 8 at the University of Northwestern in St. Paul. 22 vendors sponsored the event and set up tabletop displays indoors and offered a demo opportunity outside. The venue had two theatre auditoriums that can combine to form one that seats 400 people. The MPSTMA Spring Workshop Committee produced a variety set of speakers. Playground Maintenance, Web-based Irrigation Systems, Tree Inventory and motivational talks are set. 200 people attended.

The Spring Workshop began at 7 a.m. with coffee and doughnuts available courtesy of Justin Crandall and Midwest Groundcover Express Blowing Service. Along with St. Croix Recreation Fun Playgrounds, Midwest Groundcover also sponsored the nice, hot lunch.

After an hour of mingling, the group had a choice of two breakout sessions to attend.
The sessions took place in two auditoriums:

Auditorium 1
"Playground Maintenance"
- Tom Norquist, PlayCore

"Web-based Irrigation Systems"
- Jim Ruzicka, Mainline Consulting

Auditorium 2
"Value of Conducting a Tree Inventory"
- David Katz, Birch Tree Care

"Masterful Leadership: Uplevel Your Presence On and Off the Field"
- Barbara Churchill, Barbara Churchill Coaching & Consulting, LLC

All vendors were able to address the crowd for a couple minutes in Auditorium 1. Then, everyone had more than an hour to network and visit with Vendors before lunch which began around 11:30 a.m.

Following lunch, Chase Straw Ph.D., from the University of Minnesota, gave a talk about performance testing of sports fields and the enhancements in sensor/sampling technology. The presentation
discussed how to operate current sensor/sampler technology and integrate their use into daily management practices."

As is custom, a post Workshop get together took place at Grumpy's Restaurant afterwards.

The MPSTMA Fall Workshop is set for Wed., November 14 at the City of Eagan Community Center. More information will be forwarded when it becomes available. Vendors will have the opportunity to sponsor the event with tabletop displays.

A Comprehensive Training Program for Managing Safe Playgrounds
Set April 4-5, 2018 at City of Burnsville City Hall
100 Civic Center Parkway, Burnsville MN, 55337

The two-day Playground Maintenance Technician Program (PMT) focuses on practical playground maintenance practices, inspection principles and best practices in making repairs. This program does not focus on play theory or memorizing standards. Course modules explore the maintenance challenges associated with the common materials found in playgrounds, including concrete, metal, wood, plastics, fasteners and various surfacing materials. Through videos and case studies, participants learn about the types of playground inspections, how to repair damaged equipment and associated legal considerations. A virtual playground offers participants the opportunity to apply newly learned skills.
